The SkyMiles can be earned in many ways. However they are earned on how much you spend, not how far you fly. The basic earning rate is 5 Sky Miles per dollar spent. These earning may increase depending on the elite status you achieve. Delta Airlines offers different levels of elite status that you can achieve by spending more and more on Delta Airlines bookings and flying more frequently. The Delta Airlines baggage policy for regular basic fares includes the following-
Carry-on Baggage
1 personal item (free)
1 carry on item (free)
Checked Baggage/Hold Luggage (Applicable Fee increase with number checked.)
Over-weight and over-sized baggage (fee applicable depending on size and weight)
Carry On Baggage
Delta Airlines allows one carry- on bag and one personal item (purse, briefcase, laptop, bag) per passenger for free
However carry-on should not exceed the following size and weight restrictions-
45 linear inches ( or 115 cm (56 x 36 x 23 cm) including handles and wheels.
They should fit in the overhead bin or under the seat in front of you.
All the personal items should be of size that fits under the seat in front of you.
A jacket, umbrella, diaper bag, duty free items, assistive devices (wheelchairs, walkers, crutches, strollers, child restraint seats etc)do not count in carry on items
Checked Baggage
Delta Airlines’ Checked Baggage/Hold Luggage details are as follows-
2 bags standard, up to 10 bags maximum. (on Delta Connection up to 4 bags)
Maximum dimension allowed= 62 inches or 157 cm (length + width + height)
Maximum weight allowed= 50 pounds or 23 Kgs..
Charges:
Checked Baggage/Hold Luggage may be charged. They are determined by the type of ticket air ticket or fare you purchased and destination you are travelling. If you are an active military personnel and/or dependent, if you have status with Delta Airlines’ Frequent Flyer Program, status with an affiliated carrier or if you have Delta Airlines’ sponsored credit card, these charges may change to lesser or free.
To a number of destinations the first checked bag is free and second one is charged as per the applicable charges. (refer to the charges page)
1st checked bag = 30USD
2nd checked bag = 40USD
(as already mentioned, charges may change depending upon the destinations you are travelling to.
Delta Airlines Fee For Access Baggage:
The charges for access baggage are also determined by the travelling locations. However most common charges charged by Delta Airlines for access baggage are as follows-
o For third checked bag= 150 USD
o For fourth to tenth bag = 200 USD
Over Weight Baggage
People may have multiple travel requirements. Despite all the efforts it may happen that your baggage’s weight may cross the allowed limits. Delta Airlines provide you an over- weight baggage policy that let you travel with more luggage just by paying a predefined fee for the same. Here is the detail of what they charge for over- weight baggage-
Delta Airlines will charge the following for baggage weighing more than the standard limit of 50 pounds or 23 kg- (US Domestic)
o 51 to 70 pounds or 24 to 32 kg $100 USD extra per bag.
o 71 to 100 pounds or 33 to 46 kg $200 USD extra per bag
o Baggage exceeding 100 pounds or 46 kg will not be accepted as checked baggage/hold baggage.

Oversized Baggage Charges
Delta Airlines will charge extra $200 USD for baggage exceeding the allowed limit of 63 to 115 linear inches or 160 to 292 cm on US domestic flights. Bags larger than 115 inches or 292 cm will not be accepted as checked baggage/ hold luggage.
